About
Champions Hockey League
The Champions Hockey League (CHL) is an annual ice hockey tournament that was first launched in 2008 by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). However, due to financial difficulties, the tournament was discontinued after just one season. In 2013, the tournament was revived by a consortium of 26 clubs, 6 National Leagues and the IIHF.
The CHL features top teams from the highest-level ice hockey leagues in Europe. The competition is designed to determine the best team in Europe and to promote the sport of ice hockey across the continent. The teams compete in a round-robin format followed by a knockout stage to crown the champion.
The importance of the Champions Hockey League lies in its promotion of competitive international club hockey, helping to raise the standard of European ice hockey. It provides a platform for clubs to compete against the best from different countries, fostering cross-border rivalries and exposing players to different styles of play. The tournament also offers clubs a chance to earn additional revenue from gate receipts, broadcasting rights, and sponsorship deals. The CHL is seen as a key tool in the development and popularization of ice hockey beyond the traditional markets.
